Why iPhone XS, XS MAX, XR battery shows “Service” and How to solve this issue ?

There is one thing you must know before you install iPhone XR, XS, MAX battery. That is no matter you install an original battery or any replacement battery, the phone will show “Service” in the battery health in the setting. Also, it will show a notice that ”Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple Battery”. Please note that this is no matter you install an original battery or non-original battery it says the same. And it’s not related to iOS system.

Before we got this result, we have tested:

Plan A: Replacement iPhone battery with original PCB board

we take off the battery from a completely new phone, and we install a replacement battery with superior quality, with the original PCB board. And it shows ” Service” in battery health.

Plan B: Replacement iPhone battery.

We take off the battery from that complete new phone, and we install one factory made battery, and it shows ” Service” in the battery health.

Plan C: Exchange 2 original phone’s battery.

We bought another new iPhone XR, and we exchange these 2 batteries, Surprisingly, And battery health it shows ” Service” as well.

Why iPhone XR, XS, XS MAX battery will show” Service” after replaced?

After we found out this result, we start to figure out why this happened. In the end, we found the answer.

We look up in these three model iPhone XR, XS, XS MAX battery’s PCB module, they all have the same chips: bq27546 which is from Texas Instruments.

And when we look up into the PDF file of BQ27546, we found this:

8.3.5.3 Key Programming (Secure Memory Key)

The bq27546-G1 secure-memory authentication key is stored in the secure memory of the bq27546-G1 device. If

a secure-memory key has been established, only this key can be used for authentication challenges (the

programmable data flash key is not available). The selected key can only be established/programmed by special

arrangements with TI, using TI’s Secure B-to-B Protocol. The secure-memory key can never be changed or read

from the bq27546-G1 fuel gauge.

”

So it means that there is a program that Apple put a secure-memory key inside every single battery PCB chips, you can only unlock this program either in Apple sore or you transplant this chip into a new battery.

Why Apple do this?

From Apple’s aspect, Apple was planning to ban individual repair shop and Third Parts supplier for years. Apple already realizes that there are trillions of iPhone repair shop and third parts suppliers are taking his advantage. And Apple wants to reverse this situation. But we all know, to repair in the Apple store, the cost is usually double or triple higher.

How to solve this issue?

In the past one year, BMTbattery is making every effort on this secure-memory key researching and solving job. And so far we still can’t found out the solution on how to unlock this programmer.

Here is the solution:

1. Take off the BQ27546 Chips from the origin phone, and then transplant onto the new battery’s PCM module, if you are a very skillful technician, it takes roughly 15 mins to finish this job. Here in China, they charge around 15USD per battery. Lastly, make sure you are choosing a new battery with the original PCM board.

1. If you don’t want to transplant the Chips, tell the truth to your customers, tell them unless they repair in the Apple store, they can’t change this situation but the battery is normal to use and in a good performance, hopefully, they don’t mind this reminder much.
